Chasing an Intermittent No-Start
An intermittent no-start means the vehicle fails to start sometimes, not every time, which makes it one of the hardest complaints to diagnose because the fault often will not show up while the car is on your lift. The fastest way to find it is to stop testing for a start and start testing the circuits that control starting, even when the car seems to be behaving normally.
Start With What Changes When It Fails
Ask the customer specific questions before touching the car. Does it fail cold or after the engine is warm? Does it fail after sitting overnight or after a short trip? Does the dash light up and the starter just click, or is there nothing at all? Each answer points somewhere different.
